25th Olney Days Parade Olney - Our Secret’s Out Georgia Avenue between Prince Philip Dr and Spartan Rd |
Our kick-off event, the Mr. and Ms. Olney Contest is on the move again and is taking place at a back at a familiar venue as it moves back to the gymnasium of St. John’s Episcopal Parish School on Rte. 108.. And this year, the local band, Crash, will be providing some extra entertainment. You may have seen these young musicians (all elementary school age) performing at the Olney Farmers and Artists Market last summer.
Now that the Inter-County Connector interchange at Georgia Avenue is under construction now, the route for the Stride portion of Joe’s Ride and Stride for Olney’s Kids on Saturday morning has been tweaked a bit to avoid the construction area. This year, with the concurrence of the Brooke Manor Estates HOA, the Striders will cross Georgia Avenue at the light at Emory Lane, and then will continue down Emory and take a loop through Brooke Manor Estates, coming back out at Georgia Avenue at Hillcroft.
A short time after Joe’s Ride and Stride finishes up, we are taking some time out, on Saturday afternoon, from the fun to think about some of the issues that will impact our community in the future – near and not so near….GOCA is hosting a Town Meeting at Oakdale Emory Church from 1:00 -3:30. Folks are invited to come to talk about the draft illustrative concept being developed by the Olney Town Center Advisory Committee, public safety, youth & education, and transportation & transit. This one is not for the little kids, but our teenagers are encouraged to come and participate in the discussion….
And, when the talking is done, just head on over to Olney Manor Park for the Fun Fair and Fireworks, starting at 4:00 pm and ending at dark with our wonderful Zambelli fireworks. This year we are putting a new twist on our Homerun Derby and we’re bringing back our Lacrosse Shoot-Out, and adding a Soccer Kick-Off and a Skateboard competition.
