Olney Days is just around the corner and we are looking for some volunteers. By giving us a few hours of your time, you can help make this popular weekend a success.

The following are times that people can help. Please let Jackie Benn know when you are available or ask your friends and neighbors to let her know if they can help. We are approved for giving student service learning hour credits, however, some of the volunteer opportunities are only appropriate for individuals over 18 years of age.

Friday, May 18th Olney Idol at Olney Theatre Amphitheatre (7:00 pm)

Rain date: Saturday, May 19th, 1:30 pm on the Historic Stage

so adjust volunteering times accordingly

5:30 pm – Assisting Theatre staff with seating the audience and/or back stage

6:00 – 8:30 pm – Assisting in the lobby and cleaning up after the contest

Saturday, May 19th Free Paper Shred Event

in the Sandy Spring Bank Parking Lot

Ga Ave, next to the Olney Giant Food (Noon – 3:00 pm)

11:00 am- Helping to put up signs and set up parking lot

11:45 am – 3:15 pm Helping customers unload containers of shreddible materials

3:00 – 3:30 pm Helping clean up after the event

Saturday, May 19th Olney Fun Fair & Fireworks

at Olney Manor Park (4:00 pm – Dusk)

3:30 – 8:00 pm Helping with face painting for children near the Swim Center

4:00 – 9:00 pm Helping to run and/or score at the Frisbee Derby, Lacrosse Shoot-Out,

and Soccer Kick- Off

4:15 pm Picking up pasta from Mama Lucia’s and ice cream Giant Food

for delivering to Olney Manor Park

3:30 – 8:00 pm – Helping set up, sign up contestants,

and run a variety of food eating contests

5:00 pm – 9:00 pm Distributing Olney Days Programs and Survey Request cards

9:15 pm Clean-up of spectator area – after the fireworks – not the fallout area

Sunday, May 20th

Olney Days Parade on Georgia Avenue (2:00pm)

11:00 – 11:30 am – Set-up of chairs/tables at Reviewing Stand (Spartan Rd)

12:45 – Till end of Parade passes you (The end of the parade is out of staging area around 2:30

and gets to the reviewing stand around 3:15 pm)

1. Helping line up Parade units in staging area (Prince Philip Dr betwen Buehler Rd & Georgia Ave – Sign-In table at Prince Philip Dr & Menden Farm Rd.

2. Being a Parade marshal somewhere along the Parade route – includes handing out Olney Days Programs, and cleaning up the area working in after Parade passes and crowd disburses

2:00 – 4:00 pm Helping at reviewing stand with refreshments for judges and tallying judges’ scoring

Rock the Lot Block Party in front of Rockertia (4:00 pm – 8:00 pm)

1:00 – 4:00 pm Setting up stage and block party area

7:45 -9:00 pm Clean Up the stage area

Computer Help Needed

Don’t like attending meetings? GOCA needs a person to send out emails (using Mail Chimp) and update its website (WordPress). All items are sent to you – no writing required. Estimate 2 hours a month. Will train and will consider a student who will earn SSL hours (and a good recommendation for a job well done).

Olney Farmer’s Market Needs

The Market needs fitness and nutrition experts to run our Be Fit Tent for an hour during the Market season. Here are some other needs:

a. Chef’s Tent assistance (demo’s are at 11am)

b. Organizing teen ping pong tournaments

c. Children’s Tent assistance

d. Helping setting up and taking down (7:30am and 1pm) (for about an hour)

e.Helping w/ our community breakfasts for non-profits.

Joe Buffington, Dawn Cutright, and Olney Home for Life have been selected for our 2011 Contribution to the Community Award.
Paul Jarosinski has been selected as the 2011 Citizen of the Year.
Lori Goodwin has been selected as the 2011 GOCA Worker of the Year.
Helene Rosenheim has been selected as the 2011 Ron Berger Olney Heritage Award winner.

Barbara Falcigno was elected to serve as President at our February 14th meeting. John Webster was elected as Executive Vice President, Meg Pease Fye was elected as First Vice President, Kathy Curtis was elected as Second Vice President, Howard Grief was elected as Corresponding Secretary, Mark Hill was elected as Recording Secretary, and Ruth Laughner was elected as Treasurer.

Our award winners will be honored at our March 4th Awards Ceremony to be held at the Longwood Community Center. Our ceremony will take place from 2 to 4PM and all of Olney is invited to honor these deserving winners!

Congratulations to the 2011 GOCA Award winners and to our 2012-2013 Leadership Team.

First introduced at our December 2010 meeting, Olney Home For Life has grown from a dream to a reality. Over the past year this dedicated group of volunteers has worked diligently to bring this effort to fruition. As we are all aware, Olney just like many communities has senior citizens who want to “age in place” but are no longer able to perform simple daily chores or drive. Olney Home For Life has been created to fill this void.

Currently they are looking for volunteers to provide transportation and other assistance to Olney senior citizens. If you are interested in volunteering or if you know someone in need of their services, please call 240-406-9209 or email info@olneyhomeforlife.org

First, Tuesday at 7:30PM OTCAC is conducting a Community Outreach Meeting to solicit community input on proposed design guidelines for future development in the Olney Town Center. Note all OTCAC meetings take place at the REMAX Buffington Building in the Olney Community Room.

Second, February 14th, is our regular monthly GOCA meeting. Plan on attending, you can take your significant other out to dinner on Monday and avoid the crowds, as we will be hearing from Toll Brothers regarding proposed developments along Batchellors Forest Road and Old Baltimore Road.

Third, in honor of Valentine’s Day on February 14th, Sandy Spring Museum is sponsoring Love Notes on February 11th and 12th. This event is a show, sale, and fundraiser – complete details can be found by clicking here: Love Notes3

Montgomery County Councilmembers Nancy Navarro, Craig Rice, Marc Elrich, Roger Berliner, and Hans Riemer have requested Maryland SHA to restore the 2nd left turn lane from Maryland 97 North (Georgia Avenue) onto Maryland 28 West (Norbeck Road). Here is their letter:

Our May 18th Rally was held in response to the numerous complaints from Olney residents regarding the intersection of Georgia Avenue (Route 97) and Norbeck Road (Route 28). As everyone is aware who commutes along this route, the intersection has been altered by Maryland State Highway Administration. We’ve asked the SHA to restore an additional left turn lane onto Norbeck Road going west, as it was prior to the opening of the ICC, per this link: TrafficAlertforI-370andMD97MD28 – - - Note the lane configuration shown by Maryland SHA on page 2.
